Attacks on my book’ll not change facts – El-Rufai

nasir-el-rufaiFormer Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has said that attacks on him following his newly published book, would not change the message of the book, saying the contents were facts that happened.

He said this against the backdrop of criticisms from some former public office holders, who described the contents of the book as misleading.

El-Rufai, who said this, yesterday, in Lagos at the public presentation of the book entitled: ‘The Accidental Public Servant’, disclosed that the concluding part of the book would soon be published.

His words: ‘’I hope this book will inspire others to write books because the country deserves to know how the government works and worked.

“I did not write about their girlfriends, I only wrote about what happened in government and my experience. And this is what I think we should be doing in this country.

“They have been attacking me on the issues in the book, but they will not change anything in the book because those are things that happened.”

Also speaking at the event,Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly, challenged those, who are uncomfortable with the book to write theirs, adding that Nigerians need the book to fix all that is wrong with the nation.

LASU student shot dead at the school gate

damoche deadIt’s another sad day for the Nigerian Entertainment industry as a singer and final year student at Lagos State University, Olaniyan Damilola Ibrahim a.k.a Damino Damoche was reportedly shot dead in front LASU gate by a rival cult gang “AYE Boys”.

Damoche was shot twice in the head and hand after he finished writing a test at faculty of management science.

Newsmen spoke with some students of Lagos State University, and they revealed that two rival cult gangs in the school have been in a tough battle for supremacy in the last couple of months. The rival cult gangs, AYE and BUCA known to be bitter enemies, vowed to eliminate each other.

Journalist findings revealed that the rising star was a member of the BUCA cult group, the reason perhaps for his murder by the AYE BOYS.

Damoche was a Banking and Finance student at LASU. He was popular for his song – obo to she.

Top female Judge has sex with a prisoner

A top female judge had sex with a prison inmate half her age in an interview room, authorities have said.

Lisa Traylor-Wolff, 52, is accused of having a “physically intimate relationship with a 26-year-old client” at the Miami Correctional Facility in Peru, Ind.

The Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications claims Traylor-Wolff, who is also a defense lawyer, began the affair before her lover was jailed.

The Indianapolis Star says the relationship then continued and that she represented him as he appealed his conviction.

The commission has filed three disciplinary charges against Traylor-Wolff.

She has 20 days to respond to them, before the case goes to the Indiana Supreme Court.

Traylor-Wolff is formally accused of violating four rules of professional conduct, including having s*x with a client and undermining the integrity of the position of judge.

If found guilty, she could be banned for life from holding judicial office in the state.

Traylor-Wolff, who has not commented on the claims, formerly served as a Superior Court judge in Pulaski County and was the head of her county’s Bar Association.

She graduated from Valparaiso University law school in 1986.

Jungle Justice: 4 Armed Robbers Burnt Alive In Akwa Ibom

MurderFour gunmen suspected to be armed robbers were yesterday burnt alive in Ibanga Asakpa Oruk Anam local government area of Akwa Ibom State.

She said that members of her household alone had lost over four goats, uncountable number of chickens and other valuables to the robbers who operate under the cover of darkness with impunity.

The state police public relations officer (PPRO) could not be reached on phone as at the time of filling this report.

…dismisses appeal against FHC judgment

Court1The hope of returning to office of the former National Auditor and erstwhile Vice-Chairman, South-West of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Bode Mustapha and Engr. Segun Oni respectively dimmed today as the Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos this afternoon dismissed their appeal against the judgment of the Federal High Court, Lagos, confirming the legitimacy of the Bashorun Dayo Soremi-led Harmonised Executive (Exco) and all its activities.

The Appeal No: CA/L/515/12 against the judgment of the lower court in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/347/2012 was dismissed following the filing of a Notice of Discontinuance of Appeal by the national leadership of the PDP.

When the matter came up today, lawyers to the PDP, represented by Barrister Iyamsu Mohammed from the J.K Gad ama’s Chambers, informed the three-man panel, led by the Hon. Justice Amina Augie, that the party had filed a Notice of Discontinuance of Appeal.

The presiding judge asked counsel to the Ogun State PDP, Miss O.O. Odude of TRLP Law, if she was opposing the application and she said no.

Ruling, the court said “Pursuant to the filing of the Notice of Discontinuance Appeal by the Appellant and its non-opposition by the defendants, Appeal No: CA/L/515/12 is hereby dismissed.”

Speaking on the implication of the ruling, Miss Odude said “effectively, the Court of Appeal is ceased of the matter. It can no longer hear any appeal on the same subject matter.”

Omotola Replies Critics Of Her Show

omotola-jalade-ekeinde1The actress who started her reality show on December 6th 2012, is not pleased with the responses she is getting from her viewers and fans and took to twitter to address the issue. What are your thoughts on her reality show? Do you think it is fake as some say or you think the actress is just been herself.

Read her reason why she started a reality below

I chose to do this show because I have been rightly advised that it might be the next step in African entertainment for everyone of us. It is a new concept in this part of the world and would be a good avenue to sell our values and push the envelope for the artistes on the continent. The show will focus on my experiences as a person; with and without make-up. In and outside my house, my daily life is fun and hectic. My life is cra y. It is a reality show for all ages that is full of unusual twists and turns.’

Although the reality show has been birthed, Omotola shared her early scepticism at filming her private life due to her boring lifestyle when she is not on the red-carpet or doing something work-related. However, she was convinced by the Producer, Michael DJaba, Chief Creative Officer, iFactory Live, London, UK.

‘I’m actually worried that my life is becoming boring. It looked very interesting whenever I stepped out there on the red carpet, but the truth of the matter is that I don’t even go out. When I am done with my work, I go home. My life is very boring, but the producers say that is what they want. They want to showcase how exactly it has been that boring. They want people to see how boring my life is. So, it is a gamble. I am just taking a chance. But I can opt out of the show anytime I want. I think that is the beauty of it. I signed a contract that if it is getting unbearable for me and my family, I can opt out of it if I want to.’ Omotola revealed.

Make use of official communication channel, not youtube- Defence minister tells Boko Haram

abuja-defence-hqThe Defence Headquarters, Wednesday urged the Islamist sect -Boko Haram to make use of its official communication channels if it wanted to have any interaction with relevant security authorities.

This came following the recent conditions given by dreaded group through ‘YouTube’ for the release of the abducted French nationals.

A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Col Mohammed Yerima, on the Boko Haram demand however, noted that Youtube was not the right channel of communication.

Yerima’s statement reads in part: “The Defence headquarters wishes to make the following clarifications regarding the video clip on YouTube purportedly released by Boko Haram in which it listed conditions for the release of the French family it is holding hostage.

“The Defence headquarters do not make official response to video on the YouTube. If the Boko Haram group wishes to express concern about their members being held, they ought to have channelled their demands through the JTF telephone help lines which they are conversant with. The numbers are 08064174066, 08154429346 and 07064174066.”

It would be recalled that Boko Haram claimed recently that the French nationals will be released only when their members, including women being held by the military authorities are released from detention.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters said that over 1,200 officers and men of the Armed Forces have been deployed to the African-led International Support Mission to Mali, AFISMA.

“The last batch comprising of 162 troops will be airlifted to Mali today by the Nigerian Air Force while the Charlie aircraft provided by the British Government will equally airlift support equipment to the operation, side by side our own C-130.”

Bangladesh Islamist sentenced to death

A tribunal in Bangladesh has sentenced Islamist leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi to death for crimes committed during the country’s 1971 war of independence, BBC reports.

The Jamaat-e-Islami chief was found guilty of charges including mass murder, torture and rape. He is the most senior figure convicted so far.

His opponents erupted in cheers on hearing the verdict.

Critics of the tribunal have said that the charges against Sayeedi and others are politically motivated.

The Jamaat-e-Islami party rejects the court and has been staging a strike in protest.

Official estimates say more than three million people were killed in the war.

Security was tight around the capital, Dhaka, as the judgment was being read out. On hearing the verdict, protesters gathered at a busy intersection in the city erupted into cheers.

“We’ve been waiting for this day for the last four decades,” one man told local television, the Agence France-Presse news agency reports.

Thousands had staged a protest in the capital on Wednesday, demanding the death sentence be handed down to him.

Senate renews budget row

SenateThe Senate on Thursday renewed the row between the National Assembly and the Presidency over national planning and budgeting processes.

The upper chamber, through a unanimous resolution, mandated its committees on National Planning and Finance, to review the current national planning and budgeting linkage with the aim at recommending immediate improvement.

This followed a motion by Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi (Ekiti North) and 46 others entitled: “A call for review of the National planning and budgeting process.”

Senate President, David Mark, lamented that some government officials have become “too powerful and hijacked duties meant for other people and refused to allow those charged with specific responsibilities to do their work.”

Adetunmbi in his lead debate noted the subsumed role of the national planning function in the country’s budget process.

He said that national development planning continues to be a dominant policy instrument in many low-income and emerging market economies.

The lawmaker observed that the traditional five-year development plans the country used to operate had been replaced by a medium-term expenditure framework.

He believed that linking multi-year development plans to the national budget is fundamental to economic growth.

The budget, he said, is the mechanism by which development policies are converted into spending priorities, while the Medium- Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) is a strategic, multi-annual perspective to the budget process.

Oyerinde: AGF writes Reps

OyerindeThe Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN) on Thursday said his office was never confused on investigation into the murder of Oyerinde Olaitan, who was a former Principal Private Secretary to Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.

He also said that it is the responsibility of the Nigeria Police to handle investigation into the murder and not the State Security Service (SSS).

He said the Federal Ministry of Justice has no power to prosecute all suspects arrested in respect of the gruesome killing of Oyerinde.

Adoke made the clarifications in a February 28, 2013 letter to the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions.

He said: “My attention has been drawn to the representations made by Mr. O.T. Olaitigbe, Deputy Director, Public Prosecutions of the Federation on behalf of my office and the Federal Ministry of Justice at the Public Hearing organi ed by your Committee on February 27, 2013 on the alleged complicity and improper investigation in the murder of Oyerinde Olaitan, an Aide to the Edo State Governor.

“It has been widely reported in the electronic and print media that Mr. Olaitigbe while making his presentation to the Committee, stated among other things that the Ministry of Justice was confused as a result of the investigation reports it had received from the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service (SSS) which appeared to have indicted different sets of suspects for the alleged murder of Oyerinde and that the ministry could not proceed further with the prosecution of the suspects because of the need to harmoni e the two reports .

“I wish to completely dissociate myself from the comments purportedly made on my behalf by Mr. Olaitigbe as the comments were at best, a figment of his imagination and very far from the truth. Mr. Olaitigbe was under firm instructions to inform the Committee that:

(a) The Federal Ministry of Justice had examined the powers of the State Security Service as provided by Section 3 of the National Security Act, Cap.N.74 LFN, 2004 and the powers of the Nigeria Police Force as provided by section 4 of the Police Act Cap. P.19 LFN, 2004 and had come to the reasoned conclusion that the power to investigate crimes of the nature under consideration (murder) resides with the Nigeria Police Force while the power to gather intelligence lies with the State Security Service, and

(b) Murder, the offence allegedly committed by the suspects is exclusively within the jurisdiction of the police in all the States in the Federation. The Criminal Procedure Act, Cap., C. 38 LFN, 2004 is very clear on this matter. The Federal Ministry of Justice therefore has no power to prosecute murder cases as murder is a state offence committed against State law and that the matter was already been handled by appropriate authorities in Edo State.”

IBB endorses the emergence of APC

IBB-TO-BuhariFormer Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), has endorsed the emergence of All Progressives Congress (APC), saying it is a good political development for the country.

He also said the merger of political parties into one formidable force has vindicated the policy of two party system his administration introduced in 1992.

Speaking with Journalists on Thursday at his Uphill residence in Minna, Niger State, Babangida recalled that he was criticised and vilified when he introduced Social Democratic Party (SDP) and National Republican Party (NRC) but expressed happiness at the coming together of four of the opposition parties to form APC.

The former military leader noted that the development may return the country back to two party system, adding that the emergence of APC was not only good development but a viable platform to provide credible opposition and choice for others.

Babangida, who is a card carrying member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said, ”I was a very good advocate of two parties system. When I said two party system, you people said I am a soldier, now you have seen reason why I went for two party system. I am happy for the emergence of APC, it is a welcome political development.”

On the crisis trailing the leadership of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) which snowballed into the formation of PDP Governors’ Forum, the former leader said the crisis was elite and media induced.

He lamented that instead of mobili ing and enlightening the masses on programmes and policies, political leaders are struggling for power without carrying the masses along.

He cautioned political leaders to stop dissipating energy on appointments.

Fraud: ‘Lagos Female Judge Must Defend Self’

The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee has dismissed Justice Ibironke Harrison’s objection challenging her invitation to respond to an allegation of N117.5 million property fraud.

Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), the Chairman of the committee, gave the ruling in Abuja on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Harrison is a serving judge in the High Court of Lagos.

Daudu held that the objection was baseless because the alleged offence was committed when the judge was a lawyer in 2008.

“The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee Act is empowered to try any reported acts of misconduct by legal practitioners.

“The objection is, however, over-ruled and the judge is expected to file her defence on the allegation.

“The matter is hereby adjourned to March 6 and March 7 for continuation,” he said.

Mr. Solomon Onwukwe had in 2008 approached the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) with a complaint of alleged fraud by Harrison over the sale of his property.

Mr. Jibril Okutepa (SAN), counsel to the NBA, said that Harrison had allegedly sold a property located at 24 Iroko Awe Road, Ikate, Illasan, Eti-Osa, Lagos, without authorisation.

Okutepa further said that the judge failed to remit the whole sum to the owner of the property after an agreement was reached between the parties.

He submitted that Harrison allegedly issued cheque to the complainant that was returned unpaid.

Okutepa, therefore, urged the committee to discountenance the objections raised by Harrison.

He said: “NBA Disciplinary Committee found that the action of the legal practitioner was in breach of Rules 1, of the Rules of the Professional Conduct in the Legal Profession.”

On her objection, Harrison claimed that the committee lacked the jurisdiction to handle the matter by virtue of her position as a judge of a High Court in Lagos.

The objection further claimed that only the Nigerian Judicial Council (NJC) could handle any allegations of misconduct against judicial officers.

Oboabona was one of the revelations at the just-concluded AFCON in South Africa as he played every minute as the Super Eagles went all the way to win a third Nations Cup crown.

The central defender is now on the wanted list of several top clubs in Germany, England and Ukraine and looks set to join Nigeria’s growing legion of players in Europe.

Questions Over 2013 Budget

Goodluck-JonathanPresident Goodluck Jonathan, Tuesday, 26 February, finally signed the long-awaited 2013 budget, after he reportedly reached a truce with members of the National Assembly, following weeks of bickering over the 2013 Appropriation Bill.

The budget signing was however done behind closed doors, altering the long tradition of the president performing the exercise before the cameras, with key state officials witnessing the process.

The Senate and the House of Representatives had, in record time, on 20 December last year passed the 2013 Appropriation Bill into law, but made some alterations which the Executive arm took exception to.

The alterations made the President delay his assent to the budget, since 13 January that it was reportedly forwarded to him by the National Assembly. Jonathan’s reluctance in appending his signature to the budget prompted some lawmakers to threaten to override the president.

The lawmakers not only increased to N4.987trn, the initial N4.92trn budget estimates the president sent to them; they raised the oil benchmark from $75 to $79; as well as increased their constituency allowance allocation.

The legislators also refused to approve funds for the Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, after the president failed to accede to their request to sack the SEC Director-General, Arunma Oteh, with whom they have had a long-drawn battle.

Despite these points of disagreements between the executive and the lawmakers over the 2013 Appropriation, the president went ahead to append his signature to the contentious budget.

A statement by the presidency said the president signed the budget “…following consultations and an agreement between the Executive and the Legislature”. It added that the observations of the executive on the 2013 Appropriation Bill, as passed by the lawmakers, “will be further considered by the National Assembly through legislative action”.

Given the president’s change of mind in signing the budget, the question arises as to whether the best interest of the country was served in the ‘truce’ reached by the executive and the legislative arms.

The reasons given by the presidency for signing the budget appear vague for now. It appears the president was harassed into signing the budget. Were the knotty issues that necessitated the delay in the first place in signing the budget resolved?

We refuse to be kept in the dark. We demand a quick release of the budget breakdown by the executive arm, for Nigerians to determine if due process has not be sacrificed on the altar of political diplomacy.

Rafa Benite snapped last night and launched a blistering attack on Chelsea and their fans.

The Spaniard has endured ceaseless abuse since taking over in November. After guiding the Blues to the FA Cup quarter-finals, Benite said: “They gave me the title of interim manager which is a massive mistake.

“I will leave at the end of the season. The fans are not helping us. They are damaging the image of the club. They have to support the team instead of wasting time making banners.

“The fans do not create a good atmosphere at Stamford Bridge. They have to realise they are making a big mistake. They are putting pressure on the players. They could be playing Europa League again next season and not the Champions League.”

Benite added: “I am a professional and I will do my job. The manager is the manager, one month, seven months, it does not matter. You are the manager. The people who run the club will know I am trying to do my best.

“I have been in charge of football for 26 years. I have won the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Italian Super Cup, the Spanish League twice. Nine trophies, all the trophies you can win at club level.”

Rafa’s latest rant came 48 hours after his training-ground row with skipper John Terry.

Meanwhile, Victor Moses has described as great Chelsea’s qualification to the quarterfinal of the FA Cup. The Nigeria international scored Chelsea’s second goal last night and was thrilled by his effort and the overall performance of the team in this fifth round tie.

Chelsea will now face Manchester United in the quarter final and are on course for a fifth cup triumph in seven seasons.

“Great to be in the quarterfinals, great team performance. Always good to get a goal too,” Moses tweeted.

The Nigeria star, who shone like a million stars at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, scored in the 73rd minute after he got a good pass from Eden Ha ard. He was replaced by David Lui two minutes later. Compatriot Mikel Obi was not listed for the match.

Patience Jonathan As A Metaphor

Patience-JonathanNigerians were yet to come to terms with the FCT Minister’s budgetary allocation of N4 billion to the office of the First Lady – that has never been recognised by the country’s constitution from 1960 to 1999 – for the proposed construction of the African First Ladies’ Peace Mission (AFLPM) Secretariat in Abuja when news filtered in of the First Lady’s half a billion naira thanksgiving party at Aso Rock Villa to celebrate her “resurrection,” or sojourn in the land of the dead. I joined millions of Nigerians to felicitate with her.

And when it was time for the first lady to make an address at the lavish thanksgiving, she decided to do it offhand, making a stunning revelation: “I actually died – I passed out for more than a week. My intestine and tummy were opened. I am not La arus but my experience was similar to his. My doctors said all hope was lost. A black doctor in London who is with us in this service was flown in when the situation became critical. It was God himself in His infinite mercy that said I would return to Nigeria. God woke me up after seven days.”

The First Lady’s office is not recognised by the constitution, hence, she is not obliged to notify Nigerians of her travelling itinerary within or outside the country but by virtue of her position as a Permanent Secretary in the Public Service of Bayelsa State, she is a public servant.

On her return she denied ever attending any hospital in Germany, or anywhere! In the heat of the rumour about her whereabouts, presidential aides told barefaced and shamefaced lies. Mrs Jonathan was taking a “moment’s rest” abroad after a hectic First African Ladies’ Summit she presided over, said the First Lady’s spokesperson, Ayo Osinlu. Reuben Abati dismissed the reported illness as a rumour. But if her illness was made public and Nigerians were carried along, it would have ignited nothing but fervent prayers from every Nigerian. We can as well count on the Aso-Rock-friendly CAN to organi e numerous prayer sessions and vigils across the country. It wasn’t to be, as the rumour mill was left to swell. It baffled me that those words came from the same person who told Nigerians that she was “never” admitted. But thank God for his mercies, he gave her a second chance in spite of the deceit and lies.

Lies are nothing short of state policy of the present administration. The government, led by the President himself, have turned the country to a laughing stock. Lies are routine. Today, we talk about governors on long medical vacation shrouded in deceit and shenanigans, without a proper hand over as required by law, and the affairs of their state are left on autopilot.

As of today, there are still some state governors who are absent without leave. Gov. Sullivan Chime returned from a long medical leave abroad declaring that he owed no one an apology for not disclosing to Nigerians the state of his health before travelling out of the country.

Nigerian leaders can take a cue from ailing Vene uelan President, Hugo Chave ’s well publicised struggle with cancer that has kept him out of office for months. Vene uelans were sympathetic to his cause, showed him love and support. This much was made evident with the heroic welcome he got on his return home from cancer treatment in Cuba recently. Hillary Clinton, just before she stepped down as US Secretary of State, last year December, State Department officials announced she was undergoing treatment for a blood cloth just below her ear with details when she will make complete recovery. This is what is expected from every responsible government that understands what public office entails.

It is the very nature of this administration to propagate lies. President Goodluck Jonathan, in the last few weeks, has had a torrid time engaging northern governors and other presidential aspirants that said he allegedly signed an agreement to run for only a single term in 2011. Constitutionally, there is no law barring him from contesting but the Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Niger state, Babangida Aliyu, has reiterated that Jonathan signed a pact with PDP governors. President Jonathan inadvertently gave himself away after an AU Summit in 2011 in Ethiopia when he spoke to his compatriots abroad: “Nigerians in the Diaspora will not vote, but I will work towards it by 2015, even though I will not be running for election.”

To an international audience, Mr Jonathan tried to pull a fast one but he ended up pulling the rug where it hurt most on the failure of his administration; Power. At an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, President Jonathan claimed that Nigerians were now impressed with the improvement – stable power – in the country, bragging as he spoke, like a school boy thumping his chest, “I would have loved that you ask ordinary Nigerians on the streets of Lagos, Abuja or any other city this question about power. This is one area that Nigerians are quite pleased with the government that our commitment to improve power is working.”  His claim was punctured days later when Americans were embarrassed by a 35-minute power outage at a Super Bowl game which sparked interest from Nigerians on social media who see it as a norm in their country. CNN had to do an Open Mic in Lagos to sample opinion, which in the end sharply contrasted the president’s position. Yet another lie.

Recal that President Jonathan also lied to Nigerians in his Independence Day anniversary speech last year, making a bogus claim that the global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, ranked Nigeria the second most improved country in the fight against corruption. He said “…the fight against the scourge of corruption is a top priority of our administration. We are fighting corruption in all facets of our economy, and we are succeeding. We have put an end to several decades of endemic corruption associated with fertili er and tractor procurement and distribution.  We have exposed decades of scam in the management of pensions and fuel subsidy, and ensured that the culprits are being brought to book.” Mr. Jonathan’s claim were promptly dismissed; “Transparency International does not have a recent rating or report that places Nigeria as the second most improved country in the fight against corruption.”

What made the First Lady’s baloney worrisome is the fact that the first family was involved, at a time Nigerians thought they’ve had enough lies from President Jonathan. When the President of a country lies without flinching, expect no less from aides, ministers, governors and other government functionaries. The likes of Labaran Maku, Doyin Okupe and Reuben Abati at different times have struggled to outdo one another with deceitful press releases, phantom statistics and essays. There is a media aide of the President who comes on social media every now and then to gull Nigerians that electricity supply has improved even when the reality on ground portrays the obvious.

And state governors who go on medical leave for months without any form of notice. It is surprising that on their return they make their illness public and expect to get public sympathy. Wouldn’t it have been better if they had disclosed it before travelling to quell rumours and ignite fervent, perfervid prayers from compatriots regarded as the most religious people on earth? Lying under oath as a public servant is tantamount to stealing and other offences punishable by law.

Issues facing the next pope

Pope Benedict waves goodbye

Pope Benedict waves goodbye

VATICAN CITY (AFP) – Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation on Thursday will leave his successor a formidable to-do list as the head of a Roman Catholic Church hit hard by sex abuse and money laundering scandals, internal bickering and growing secularism in Europe.

Here is a list of key issues on the agenda:

– SEX ABUSE: After sordid revelations of child abuse by priests erupted in Europe and the United States, Benedict apologised for the Church’s role in turning a blind eye and protecting abusers, but campaigners say not enough has been done to bring suspects before the law or to punish the senior prelates who covered up the abuse for decades.

– VATICAN FINANCES: Plagued by a dark history of murky financial dealings, the Vatican has promised to step up efforts against money laundering and wants to be on a White List of countries that comply with international rules. The head of the bank was unceremoniously sacked in May last year under a cloud of intrigue and his successor was only named this month.

– HOMOSEXUALITY AND GAY MARRIAGE: This is one of the Vatican’s most critical issues. While condemning violence against homosexuals, Benedict has refused to be shaken on the Church’s teachings on the traditional family of father, mother and child, and intervened directly in recent heated debates in France and Britain on same-sex marriage. In December, Benedict said mankind was at stake, insisting that same-sex unions called into question what it means to be “true men”.

– CURIA, SECRETS AND INTRIGUE: Absorbed by his studies, the academic Benedict has failed to put his stamp on the Curia, the Church’s secretive and powerful governing body. Dominated by Italian clerics, the Curia is key to a papacy because it can intervene in unfavoured papal decisions and uphold the status quo. Benedict was hit hard by the “Vatileaks scandal” last year, where memos leaked by his butler revealed infighting. The next pope will have to try to get a grip on the Curia.

– ORDINATION OF WOMEN AND PRIEST CELIBACY: Calls from self-proclaimed disobedient priests and campaigners to end priestly celibacy, and accept women into the clergy to fill positions left empty as priest numbers dwindle, were denounced by Benedict last year as self-serving. He insisted the Church does not have God’s authority to ordain women and said celibacy was central to the priesthood — but amid increasing calls for clergy to be allowed to marry and claims that celibacy may have contributed to sex abuse scandals, the future pope may have to re-think the issue.

– ABORTION AND EUTHANASIA: Benedict has insisted on the Vatican’s “duty” to defend “basic human values” by refusing to counter abortion or euthanasia, describing attempts to “select people and exclude others from humanity” as utterly immoral. In 2010 he appointed to a top Vatican job Canadian cardinal Marc Ouellet, who has said that abortion is a “moral crime” even in rape cases. But Church thinking on the issues is evolving and a new pope will have to clarify its stance.

Somali president offers amnesty to pirates

PirateMOGADISHU (AFP) – Somalia’s president has offered an amnesty to young pirates in a bid to end attacks off the Horn of Africa nation’s coast, he told AFP.

“We have been negotiating with the pirates indirectly through the elders,” said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. “Piracy has to end”.

Mohamud, elected by lawmakers six months ago, said that he wanted to offer an “alternative means of earning a living” to young Somalis who have taken up the gun to join pirate gangs.

However, Mohamud said that the amnesty was not open to pirate kingpins — those who take the vast majority of the profits from the attacks — some of whom are wanted by Interpol.

“We are not giving them amnesty, amnesty is for the boys,” he said.

Somalia has been ravaged by conflict since 1991 but a new UN-backed government took power in September, ending eight years of transitional rule by a corruption-riddled administration.

Large parts of Somalia have been carved up by rival militia forces who have developed autonomous regions that pay little, if any, heed to the weak central government.

Many of the most notorious pirates are based along the northern coastline of the semi-autonomous Puntland region.

Man kills mum, dismembers and scatters her body parts in garbage bags across town

MAN KILL 2 MAN KILL

Via NY Daily News

A schizophrenic South Bronx man confessed Tuesday to dismembering his mom and scattering her body parts in garbage bags across the South Bronx, police sources said.

Deranged suspect Bashid McLean, 23 (pictured right), implicated himself in the gruesome death after investigators recovered a saw inside the apartment where he lived with victim Tanya Byrd (pictured right) and his 7-year-old brother, Nasyr.

Cops also found a shopping cart used to lug 52-year-old Byrd’s severed body parts from their home to four locations within walking distance of the murder scene, police sources said.

Byrd was terrified by McLean, who was on probation after coming at two cops with a knife in 2010, and suspected that he was battering little Nasyr. The younger brother has Down syndrome, according to one neighbor.

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Bashid killed her,” said a 43-year-old woman who lives in the building on Westchester Ave. in Melrose. “She was afraid of that boy. . .He was a hellion.”

When bruises began appearing on the special-needs child, Byrd suspected her older son, the neighbor said.

“Bashid had a problem controlling his rage,” said the neighbor. “He had creepy eyes. Didn’t like to look you in the eye — but when he did, they went right through you.”

Although McLean called police to report his mom was missing, he quickly emerged as a suspect in the gruesome killing, police sources said. Cops were questioning him at the 40th Precinct stationhouse late Tuesday.

McLean’s sister, Porsche Lovett, who visited him at the stationhouse, said he showed no remorse. “He looked me in the eyes and told me he did nothing wrong when he killed her,” she said. “I don’t know who he is.’Byrd’s body parts were stuffed in garbage bags and scattered throughout her neighborhood, with a dog walker spying her right leg protruding from a pile of garbage around 5 a.m., police said.

Three heavy-duty plastic garbage bags stuffed with body parts were found nearby.

The victim’s head, hands, torso, legs and shoulder were pulled from the trash bags, the sources said.
The brutal killing left McLean’s family members reeling — despite Bashid’s history of aggression and mental health problems.
“He did destructive things,” said his father, James McLean. “He set fires; nobody could control him. ”
The dead woman’s sister said Bashid nursed a grudge against Byrd over his placement in foster care while his mom battled a drug problem. They reunited when he turned 18.
“I want people to know my sister was a good mother,” said Cassandra McLean. “She always took care of him.”

Ebonyi State University shut down over protest

ABAKALIKI-EBONYI state government Thursday shut down its own institution, Ebonyi state University, EBSU, Abakaliki over the multiple protests that had plagued the University since the commencement of this year’s academic session by the students who are demanding a reduction in tuition fees.

The latest protest that broke the back of the camel this week as when the protesting students temporally brought commercial and social activities to a halt in various parts of the state capital as they engaged the anti-riot policemen in bloody face off, which was coming barely two weeks after similar protest.

The students, who came under heavy teargas attack from men of the Nigerian Police in the state, were protesting alleged hike in their tuition fees as a bus belonging to the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution was allegedly burnt down by the angry students.

The Vice Chancellor of the EBSU, Professor Francis Idike who announced the closure of the University said it was necessary considering the tension the protesting students had created across the state. He argued that if the institution was not closed immediately it might lead to a new wave of insecurity in the state.

This came as the Governor of the state, Chief Martin Elechi directed top echelon of the institution to immediately shut down the University. He added that the institution would be shut down as long as necessary so as to allow peace and tranquillity to reign in the
state.

Elechi who spoke on during a town hall meeting with his Commissioners, local government Chairmen and other stakeholders at Women Development Centre, Abakaliki alleged that the violent acts exhibited by the protesting students could have been influenced by yet-to-be determined factors and persons in the state.

The Governor further explained that education was neither free nor cheap anywhere and that the University authority, as the manager of the institution was in the best position to determine what fees should be paid by students of the institution.

It would be recalled that the protesting students who were stopped by the Anti-riot officers of the state police command were seen carrying placards with inscriptions saying “We want Normal price” “Mr. Governor its 60/40 or nothing” “Don’t try our patience”, amongst others.

They alleged that they are being forced to pay school fees between N88, 000 (for indigenes) and 130,000 (for non-indigenes) depending on one’s department.

“When we were in year one they said we should pay N88,000 for indigenes and N130,000 for non-indigenes which they said is for only first year students while other regular students paid N40,000 and N60,000. They said we would revert to the normal school fees when we get to second year only for them to now tell us to continue with the fees we paid in year one”.

“PDP is the only party with national spread and Nigerians have come to accept it. But when there is an implosion, when you have more Judases than disciples. The Judases are more than disciples now. We have to cleanse the system of Judases to support Mr. President. Where there is treachery, where there are more Judases than you have disciples, we want to have good disciples, we know that even in Christendom when Jesus Christ have 12 disciples, there was one Judas, but if the Judas were up to nine, then, Jesus could have been in trouble, the gospel would have been in trouble today.”- Godswill Akpabio Akwa Ibom State Governor and Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum

Governor Obi, Bianca condemn demolition of Ojukwu Memorial Library

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain and wife of late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, on Wednesday, separately condemned in strong terms the demolition of Ojukwu Memorial Library in Owerri by unknown persons.

Speaking during an assessment tour of the demolished property, they described the action of the evil doer as a sheer act of wickedness, lamenting that the public would have benefited greatly from the use of the library facilities.

According to Obi, “the effort it took to build this library should be appreciated and not repaid in this manner”.

On her own part, Bianca said: “I am astonished that an Igbo man can be capable of such wickedness; to destroy something built in memory of a man the entire Igbo nation is so proud of”.

The leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Mr Ralph Uwazurike who funded the building of the library , expressed his pain over the demolition.

He said that work would continue on the project despite the setback.

It could be re-called that the Ojukwu Memorial Library building in Owerri, the Imo State capital, was last week reduced to rubble by unknown persons.

The building which is located at 2 Ralph Uwazuruike Street, Area G, New Owerri was being built by the leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Ezeigbo, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, in honour of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The building, when completed, would have also served as a research centre on Igbo studies.

Naira weakens as importers demand dollars

Naira notesThe naira fell the most in almost five months as importers demanded dollars to settle oil bills and foreign-exchange obligations.

The currency retreated 0.4 per cent to N158.25 per dollar, the biggest decline on a closing basis since October 5, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, relies on imports to cover 70 per cent of its own fuel needs because of inadequate refining capacity. Fuel imports are a source of pressure on the naira, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“The weakening of the naira is due to increased dollar outflows to cover oil import bills and other foreign-exchange obligations,” Kunle Ezun, a Lagos-based analyst at Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, said by phone yesterday.

Traders are also increasing dollar demand before next month’s Easter celebrations, Tunde Ladipo, Chief Executive Officer of Lagos-based Valuechain Investment Limited, said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria sold $200 million at a foreign- currency auction yesterday to stabilise the naira, compared with $150 million at the previous sale on February 25, it said in an e- mailed statement.

The regulator held the benchmark interest rate at a record high 12 per cent for an eighth straight time on January 21. The nation’s inflation rate fell to nine per cent in January from 12 percent in December, the statistics bureau said

Confusion persists over killing of Oshiomhole’s aide

OshiomholeWHO killed Olaitan Oyerinde, Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s private security?

The question remained as knotty as ever yesterday, with the Attorney General of the Federation’s office saying it is “confused”.

The row over the murder continued in Abuja at the House of Representatives Committee on Public Relation’s hearing on the murder in Benin City last year.

Oshimhole appeared before the Uzo Azubike-led committee and reiterated his claim that the police had a hand in Oyerinde’s murder.

The police, represented by Deputy Inspector General of Police Peter Gana, disagreed.

Gana, who stood in for Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar, described the allegation as “false, baseless and intended to mislead the public”.

He accused Oshiomhole of using his privileged position to impugn the reputation of the police and the character of its officers.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation) Chris Esike described the allegation as “false, unfounded and diversionary.” According to him, no one could have done a better job than what the Police did.

The Minister of Justice, who was represented by Mr. O. T. Olatigbe, a Deputy Director in the ministry, said it would have done security agencies a lot of good if they had a harmonised position, which would have made it easier for the AGF’s office to proceed with the judicial aspect of the case,

According to Olatigbe, the police and the State Security Service (SSS) forwarded two “believable” reports to AGF’s office. “We don’t know which one to act upon. We are confused.

“We need further investigation. We have two reports and both are convincing but we don’t know which to believe,” he said.

The committee chair flayed the position of the AGF, describing it as sad that the AGF whom the President and citizens depended on for legal advice in such a situation, is saying it is confused.

Azubuike said: “It is unfortunate. It is shameful and embarrassing that in a situation like this, the office of the Attorney General of the Federation is confused when the President of the country and everyone is looking up to you.”

Oshiomhole was at the session with Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) who sat beside and whispered occasionally to him. The police chief came with Kyari Gadzama (SAN).

Oshiomohle said the police were complicit in the murder of his aide. He said even police records showed that the suspects and the murder weapon that killed Oyerinde had been in the police custody since April 24, 2012, prior to death of his aide. He recounted how the SSS intimated him with credible progression of the investigations into the murder while the Police shunned all his efforts to know how the investigation was progressing.

The governor said the principal suspect in the murder was in the custody of the police as at April 24, 2012 and that call logs supposedly used to link activist Rev. David Ugolor to the case had not been produced, in spite of their claim that it was in their possession. “Almost a year after, they cannot produce it,” he said.

Oshiomhole flayed the recommendation in the police report that the investigating officer be promoted, adding that rather, DIG Gana and DIG Esike should be sacked for implicating Ugolor in the matter.

The governor said the Police failed to address the issue and that the only thing they said on their inconsistency in the case was that the officer who made the entry was serving outside the country. “For the police to give such a flimsy excuse on such a key issue is unacceptable,” he added.

Oshiomhole insisted that the police were involved in the murder, adding that “Those responsible have prevailed on the police to help shield them from prosecution.”

The Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Ita Ekpeyong, recounted how the agency was able to track down the perpetrators of the murder, adding that all the testimonies of the suspects point to the fact that it was armed robbery and not assassination as claimed by the police.

Single term row: Jonathan puts Aliyu under pressure

JonathanNorthern Governors Forum Chairman Babangida Aliyu was at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday – barely 24 hours after a shouting match with Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio.

The Niger State Governor was at the Villa for about two hours amid anxiety by his colleagues and political associates. He was reportedly “summoned” by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Aliyu has been under pressure from some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders to retract his comments on an alleged “one-term only agreement” signed with the governors of the party by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Besides, Aliyu is being asked to withdraw support for the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, who is seeking re-election in May.

Before the NGF rescheduled its chairmanship election on Monday night, Aliyu and Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio had engaged in a shouting match over the formation of the PDP Governors Forum, which the Niger State governor described as baseless and an attempt to break the ranks of the 36 governors.

Aliyu was the only governor “summoned” to the Villa. It was not immediately clear yesterday what Aliyu was told at the Villa, but there were indications that Aliyu’s invitation may also have been in connection with his recent utterances that some external forces were at work to split the NGF.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “We are aware that since he raised issues on the President’s pact with PDP governors, he has been under pressure to retract the comments he made during a phone-in-programme on Liberty Radio in Kaduna.”

Some security agencies, PDP stalwarts and government officials are said to have obtained the tape of the interview for review to ascertain that Aliyu actually made the revelation.”

According to source, the visit to the Villa was part of steps to change Aliyu, who is believed to be aggrieved against the Presidency.

“They know that Aliyu is leading the Northern Governors Forum, a powerful caucus which could make much political impact. They also need the Forum’s support to stop Amaechi’s re-election in May,” he said, adding:

“Of the 19 Northern governors, only four were said to be anti-Amaechi on Monday. They included Governors Ibrahim Shema(Katsina); Gabriel Suswam(Benue); Isa Yuguda(Bauchi) and Idris Wada(Kogi).”

But it was also learnt that the visit to the Villa might have to do with alleged anti-party statements which Aliyu made at the NGF’s session on Monday.

He faulted the formation of the PDP Governors Forum, saying he foresaw a dictator emerging in the nation’s polity, The Nation learnt.

Another source added: “The PDP leadership felt slighted and it believes that Aliyu should be called to order. As a matter of fact, Akpabio visited the PDP National Headquarters on Tuesday to give bite to the new forum.

“Some party leaders are already agitating that Aliyu should be sanctioned for anti-party activities.

“The governor has also uncovered plans to frame him up as part of a grand plot to impose disciplinary sanctions on him.”

The anti-Amaechi forces continued yesterday to rally Northern governors for the Presidency to effect a change of leadership in the NGF.

A third source added: “These forces are now reaching out to the governors one-by-one to lobby them to dump Amaechi.

“Those who are pro-Amaechi are watching their backs to keep the NGF united and solid against any form of infiltration.”

OOU SSANU pleads for facilities

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago – Iwoye, has urged the state government to assist the institution in improving her infrastructural facilities to foster better working condition, teaching and learning.

SSANU said the ongoing infrastructural renewal projects by the government – “road construction and building of model schools,” are laudable but added that similar gestures should be extended to OOU. He said the university needs well constructed road network and a Senate building, as well as hostel facilities for the students.

The OOU-SSANU Chairman, Comrade Taiwo Egberongbe, who made the appeal at the 44th meeting of the Western Zone of the association hosted by the university, said it is regrettable that 30 years after, OOU cannot boast of a befitting Senate building and other basic necessary infrastructure, urging government to do something about it.

According to him, the said infrastructure when provided would make teaching, research and learning easier.

Egberongbe urged the government to increase the subvention to the institution and strive to also take up its entire salary bill, stressing that a situation where the state government shared the wage bill burden between her and the varsity in the ration of 70:30 is killing the institution.

The meeting which was attended by delegates from 18 branches that make up the SSANU Western Zone was declared open by the university Vice-Chancellor, Prof Saburi Adesanya.

Also, SSANU Chairman, Western Zone, Com. Alfred Jimoh, appealed to OOU management to look into the issues raised by their colleagues and find ways of addressing them – particularly delay in payment of salaries, outstanding arrears, to ensure peaceful academic environment.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by his Deputy, Prof Adewale Sule-Odu, said the university would continue to take measures capable of fostering better working environment for all stakeholders.

He urged SSANU to treat students and alumni with respect whenever they come for registration, clearance and certificate collection, saying they are veritable source funds later for development of their alma mater.

UNILAG donates space, equipment to Braille centr

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has provided the Soroptimist International Braille Centre located inside the university with bigger space and 30 Braille computers.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Rahamon Bello, announced the donation when the club’s federation President of Great Britain and Ireland, Mrs Pat Black visited the Soroptimist International Eko (SIEKO), the owners of the centre.

This means the centre will be relocated from its present location behind the main auditorium to a place the university is yet to disclose.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof Babajide Alo, the Vice-Chancellor said the university management decided to assist them in upgrading the centre because of the good work the club is doing.

He promised to assist them more than half way and told them that the University Librarian Dr Okanlawon Adediji has been charged with the responsibility of meeting their needs whatsoever.

“We don’t have an option but to support the project. We want to cater for all our students especially our special students,” he said.

In her address, Cordelia Barber, SIEKO President told Mrs Black that three years ago, the Eko club saw the need to start a Braille centre in the university to help the visually-impaired.

“The renovation of the site and purchase of specialised equipment was and is still financed by the Late Chief Ayo Rosiji’s Family. The centre is managed by, Mrs Jean Obi. She is also our technical adviser while Guinness Nigeria and UNILAG donated some computers,” she explained.

She said apart from the Braille centre, the 30-year old club has sponsored many female students from primary through secondary and higher institutions in the country.

Chairperson of the centre, Norma Jackson Steele said there are 40 visually-impaired students in the centre.

She said the equipment in the centre include the Braille machine, which translates words into Braille, scanner machine, which scan words into Braille and internet facility for the blind.

She called for support from individuals and organisations saying about N1.5million yearly to keep running the centre. “We have created awareness with the university that is why they have decided to assist our centre.”

In her remarks, Mrs Black said the project is dear to her heart as she is also almost blind and anybody helping people who are visually-impaired are dare to her heart.

She thanked UNILAG and pleaded that they should spread the word to other universities to get involved in assisting the blind and other people with disability.

Productivity reduced cultism in Auchi Poly

The rector of the Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, Dr Philipa Idogho, has attributed the near eradication of cultism in the school in the last three years to the continuous productive engagement of its students.

In an interview with journalists, Dr Idogho said: “Students want to learn and that is why we are exploiting that avenue. We keep them busy with academic and entrepreneurial activities, leadership training and all of that; that is why we have experienced this phenomenal reduction on the issues of cultism in this school.

Mrs Idogho, who answered questions on a variety of issues, appealed to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to increase the carrying capacity of the institution so it can admit more students.

“Every year, we see up to 24,000 students coming to do the post-UTME screening but many of them are not admitted because of our carrying capacity. That is why we are building more facilities. We are asking the NBTE to give us additional carrying capacity to enable us to admit more students into the school,” she said.

Besides, she said the school has established a Centre for Flexible Skills that would enable primary school leaving certificate holders and its equivalents to develop themselves in their pace through the use of radio, face-to-face learning and lecture notes.

She said the programme was important because the students would graduate from one level to another based on their ability to comprehend what they are taught.

Burnt school gets N10m

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has given an initial cheque of N10 million to the Guardian Angel Nursery and Primary School, Abatete, Nnewi to commence the rebuilding of its two-storey building razed by fire earlier this month.

Obi presented the cheque when he visited the school with some top government officials.

He said the gesture was in fulfillment of his promise during an earlier visit to assess the level of destruction wrecked by the inferno.

Obi said the government would support the school to complete the structure and reinstated the determination of his administration to continue to assist schools irrespective of ownership status.

The governor appealed to privileged individuals and groups to contribute in actualising the project.

The Headmistress of the school, Reverend Sister Maria Goretti Ngwuagu, who expressed gratitude to the Governor for his kind gesture, noted that his prompt intervention brought a lot of relief to the school. Reverend Sister Ngwuagu said the Governor has remained responsive to the needs and yearnings of the people, assuring that they will continue to support his administration with prayers.

Also speaking, Reverend Father Ignatius Okeke of Most Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Abatete said the Governor’s intervention had consoled them and praised the high level of success recorded in the church’s partnership with government in promoting the education and health sectors.

Varsities urged to comply with NUC guidelines

Prof. Julius OkojieThe Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, (NUC), Prof Julius Okojie has called on Senates of Nigerian universities to ensure adequate compliance with all guidelines from NUC for the establishment of programmes and the establishment of department.

He said the days of running programmes in unapproved centres without qualified academics are gone.

“Departments and programmes should not be mounted as a means of creating empires for ourselves in the system. I have always warned my colleagues in the university that if we cannot regulate ourselves then we will leave our Senate to be regulated by politicians,” he added.

Delivering the 18th convocation lecture of the Lagos State University (LASU) entitled: Quality Assurance and the Challenges of Mandate Delivery in Nigerian Universities, Okojie said some of the challenges affecting the delivery of quality mandate in Nigeria include funding, which affects the quality of teaching, learning and research facilities. He said the quantity and quality of learning resources to be provided to make a conducive environment is dependent of the volume of financial resource made available to the institution.

Represented by Prof Adebisi Balogun, former VC of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Okojie said other problems are dilapidated physical infrastructure, inadequate manpower, student enrolment and access, leadership and governance.

Defining quality assurance as the policies, systems, strategies and resources used by the institution to certify that its quality requirement and standards are being met, he said the job of a QA agency is to see that standards processes and policies are in place and carried out.

Saying that some universities have developed their master plan and strategic plan with identified goals and action plan for 25 years, he asked if LASU has one.

For efficient service delivery, he said the NUC encourages universities to have a SERVICOM unit, continually develop a system that seeks to improve the provision of service with emphasis on future results, develop statistical tools to understand sub-systems, uncover problems and identify processes for further improvement, and set goals for the measurement of results that will prevent future failures.

Scores of youths in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, rampaged through the town on Wednesday to protest the death of six pupils in a fatal road accident.

The deceased were pupils of Kingdom Heritage Nursery and Primary School, Eket.
Eyewitnesses said the pupils, whose identities could not be ascertained, met their untimely deaths when their school vehicle fell into a ditch on Eket-Ibeno Road, last month.

They said before the school driver lost control of the vehicle, he tried in vain to dodge many bad spots on the road.

The eyewitnesses said apart from those who died on the spot, other undisclosed number of pupils sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

It was learnt that the deaths of the pupils sparked off Wednesday’s protest as youths felt the pupils would have lived if the road was in good order.

One of the protesters, who craved anonymity, said because of the dilapidation of the Eket-Ibeno road, many road mishaps had taken place there.

He said the road had paved the way for frequent cases of kidnapping, armed robberies, as criminals usually capitalised on the bad road to waylay innocent road users and residents.

He said due to the situation of the road, youths in the area had given the relevant authorities several ultimatums to rehabilitate the road.

He said unfortunately, their appeals and threats to the authorities and major stakeholders had always been ignored.

Youth President, Afaha Eket, Mr. Emmanuel Sakey, lamented the poor state of the road, saying the bad roads claimed the lives of those “innocent” children.

He said the communities had been experiencing accidents on many roads in the areas on a daily basis, saying that many pregnant women had had miscarriages.

“Why we are demonstrating this morning is because of the way government is treating us. If you look between Eket and Ibeno, you will see that we don’t have road here. For a number of years, we have been suffering from this road and many other roads in this area.

“We have lost many school children to accidents apart from the six which happened recently. There have been frequent cases of kidnapping, armed robberies and more as the hoodlums seize the opportunity to lie in wait for road users.

“We are aware that an oil firm had paid for the construction of the road, but it is still a deathtrap.”
Eket community leader, Mr. Nsini Eduok, said he woke up in the morning to see youths block the road.
He said he did not see anything wrong with the youths’ action, insisting that if the right thing had been done, the accident, which triggered their protests, would not have occurred.

He claimed the community had complained to state government and other bodies about the deplorable state of the road but they had kept adamant.

He said, “I have just been informed that the youths are protesting against the bad roads leading to where the resources of this country come from. The condition of this road is worse than any other roads in the country.
“The rehabilitation of the road was given to FCC Nigeria Limited but we were told the government asked them to stop. Why they did that, we cannot actually say.

“Since then we have not seen any sign that this road is going to be done.

Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom Police Command, Dickson Etim, said it was only one pupil out of eight that were in the school bus that died, against six as given by the protesters.

He added that seven others sustained different degrees of injuries, stressing that the accident occurred when the children were going to school.

“When I heard of the accident, I called the DPO in the area and he confirmed to me that it was only one person that died against six given by the protesters,” Etim said.

Gov. Babangida Aliyu: alleges blackmail plot

The Governor said the politicians who he refused to name are planning to do this by printing and pasting posters across Abuja, with the message: “Vote Babangida Aliyu for President,” as a means of pitting him against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has placed an embargo on campaigning for the presidency.

The Governor made this allegation in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo.

He added that some media houses have also been commissioned to write negative reports about his administration as part of the design to discredit him and the Niger State government.

The Governor, who described himself as a law abiding member of PDP, however said he is aware of the directive from his party that campaigns for 2015 elections should be put on hold and that the circulation of the posters is to portray him as a rebellious party member.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Aliyu has not declared for the presidency. If anything, he is at the moment focused on delivering on the mandate given to him by the people of Niger State and would not be distracted,” the statement said.

The Governor said his commitment for now is to re-engineer Niger State to achieve its vision of becoming one of the top three most developed state economies in the country by the year 2020.

While noting that God is the ultimate decider of who becomes what, the Governor said Nigerians should be wary of those who want to discredit others for selfish gains.

Army, Police deny killing Nasarawa Varsity Students

STUDENT AND SOLDIERSContrary to widespread reports, the Nigerian Army on Wednesday denied that its men were involved in the killing of four students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi last Wednesday.

The students were allegedly killed by soldiers who were called in to help quell protest over poor water supply to their hostels last Monday.

But Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru, the Director of Army Public Relations, told journalists in Abuja on Wednesday that though soldiers from the 177 Guards Battalion in Keffi were called in to assist the police in quelling the violent protests, they did not kill any student of the university.

“What these people are writing is not correct. Soldiers were not deployed and couldn’t have carried out the shooting. Our men were on patrol duty at Keffi,” said the Army PRO.

“The students, who were protesting, had blocked the road but soldiers did not have any altercation with them. There were the police and other security agencies, who were on the ground to handle the situation. There is also this information we have that the police even recovered some arms from the students who were protesting,” Brigadier Attahiru added.

The Police had earlier denied shooting the students.

Frank Mba, spokesperson for the Police said policemen only help to clear the portion of Abuja-Lokoja highway which was blocked by students during the protest.

“The policemen that went to the scene only cleared the expressway that was blocked by the students. Two students were killed and seven others were hospitalised for injuries sustained during the violent protest,” said Mba.

He added that: “Any question on the killing should be directed to the Army. They have their Public Relations unit; the police were not involved in the shooting.”

Drogba: UEFA gives all clear

Didier Drogba will be allowed to play in Galatasaray’s Champions League clash against Schalke after the German club had their objections over his eligibility thrown out by UEFA on Wednesday.

Schalke, who came away from Istanbul with a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their last 16 clash, believed that the transfer of the former Chelsea striker from Shanghai Shenhua to the Turkish side was completed after the registration deadline.

But the European governing body said that the deal was completed according to the rules.

“Having examined all the documents of the case, the Control and Disciplinary Body decided to reject the protest lodged by Schalke,” said a UEFA statement.

The second leg of the tie takes place in Germany on March 12.

Lazio were fined 40,000 euros and ordered to play their next two home games in Europe behind closed doors after their fans were accused of throwing fireworks and displaying racist behaviour in their Europa League against Borussia Moenchengladbach on February 21.

The Italians will play Stuttgart on March 14 behind closed doors as well as their next home tie.

Lazio were fined 140,000 euros in January after their Europa League group clashes against Tottenham and Maribor were marred by racist chanting.

Lazio were slapped with a 90,000-euro sanction after some sections of the Rome club’s fans brandished a banner reading “Free Palestine” at the November 22 game against Tottenham in Rome which finished 0-0.

Others sang “Juden Tottenham” (“Tottenham Jews” in German) at the visiting fans, whose club has a historical Jewish connection.

Lazio had previously been fined 40,200 euros after monkey chants were directed at Tottenham players during the reverse fixture in London in September.

The Italians also received a suspended one-match stadium ban and a 50,000-euro fine for their supporters’ racist conduct in the group stage game against Maribor in Slovenia in December.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was banned for two European matches after being sent off in the dying moments his team’s Champions League 2-1 win at Valencia.

The big Swede will miss the second leg on March 6 as well as the first leg of the quarter-final should PSG qualify.

“The Turkish team are also excluded from participating in the next UEFA club competition for which they would qualify — this sanction is deferred for a probationary period of two years. Fenerbahce have also been fined 60,000 euros,” said UEFA.
