Nigeria music industry grown into music that is far from my premise- Paul Play

In this brief interview with Daniel Ehi of Naija Center News, he talks about what he has been doing in the United State, what inspired him to sing the new single ” Renegade” a wonderful song that everyone needs to listen to. Below is the excerpt:

When were you signed up on BMI?

I joined BMI under a publisher Murder Riddims USA in 2009.I became a member about a month ago.

What have you been doing in the state?

Paul playI was in the states last year for a short concert tour with Rajsam Inter and Goodlife Entertainment. I also had meetings  with the wife of the president of Atlanta musicians association(James le favor) and Mr. L.A. Jackdon on setting up a record label in Atlanta. We are on that project at the moment.

I signed with two Licensing companies and a publishing company on my RnB and Pop songs which I recorded in the US at Faith City Records studios owned by another Nigerian music star. Bola Abimbola. Bola who is now a Pastor and gospel musician started a movement called “Nu Jerusalem Movement” which I joined and embarked on productions for Atlanta gospel musicians. I worked as a producer with him on a project with an american singer Latoya Newman.

I got introduced to many upcomers who have made some success in Atlanta to work with them. One of them is a young white girl called “Farrel”

The projects were so many that I had to shift the production schedules and returned home in November to continue this summer.

Why have you been so silent?

I’ve been silent partially because of health reasons. This has really slowed me down drastically.  I needed a couple of years to get myself back together.I had to suspend my album launch in 2010 and face other businesses. But I’m determined not to let that hold me down. I have wrote about 30 songs within that period. Most of which are already signed for publishing.

Another reason has got to do with decisions on my next level career wise. My advisers and I believe that I’ve done it all in the Nigerian music scene. I’ve performed for Nigerians from the president in Aso rock to the people on streets of Ajegunle. What else is there to conquer?

I directed my energy towards international music industry which is paying off right now. I want to leave out some achievements which I believe  are better kept secret for personal reasons.

The third reason is that the music industry has grown into a kind of music that is far from my premise.

The producers are coming up strong and the industry is growing in a clubby direction.

I can’t change my style or bend for the impression that you must sing club songs. I can only sing songs that can be played in the club. So I have to work hard on an album that you don’t need to be in the club before you know what I’m talking about. I have worked on many electronic pop songs which I think might fall in that clubby style.

I don’t want to lose my identity or my production style.I have recorded many commercially successful albums because I kept my identity and uniqueness. Its not  because I’m the best but because I’m good  at being unique.

What inspired you to sing the new single, Renegade?

“Renegade” came like an accident. I’m known for writing love songs and gospel songs. But this is a twist in a way. It’s a realistic song. It talks about an experience everyone can relate with. I always want to bring something different and unique to my ardent fans and” Renegade” seems to fit the plan.

I am now  into writing songs that will leave an impression after listening. Something that will make you go ” yeah..I had this experience before when I was younger”

Touch the mind of the listener that’s my next game plan.
