Cheerio to a literary icon, adieu papa.
Hopefully, your demise herald your life time dream
Of accord and not of havoc
In Things Fall Apart, a sermon you preach
Nigeria under siege, unlike Okonkwo, cowardly we watch in awe,
Umunna in crises, the centre is porous, in despair we succumb
Achebe came, he saw, he told a tale of imminent doom
Arrow of God, a forecast of what more to come
Calamity was pronounced but bluffed; we say the gods are blind
Hear the cry of blood in North, for things are No Longer at Ease indeed,
Every cradle cries a cry for A Man of the People,
But is there a man of the people not a caliber Achebe described?
Embezzler, womanizer, sycophants and threats to national heritage
Adieu, our icon of creativity, our literary giant,
Happy you trod on our fatherland,
In her, your footprints an indelible mark to erase
Never, never will your path be shrouded in darkness,
Umbrella of immortality your works attuned,
Adieu, Achebe, to you creativity is bestowed
