Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on Sunday presented a cheque of N24m to the Flying Eagles for their one-month camping in the state.
The Flying Eagles won bronze at the Algeria 2013 U-20 African Youth Championship.
Obi presented the cheque on Sunday during a reception in Akwa for the team.
He said the money would take care of the players’ accommodation, feeding, medication and allowances during their camping in the state in preparation for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.
He also announced a 30 per cent increase in the monthly allowance paid to former Enugu Rangers players with effect from January in addition to N50,000 Christmas bonus to each of the ex-players.
The governor had earlier paid a condolence visit to the family of the ex-international Okey Isima, who died recently, at Nsugbe. The ex-Rangers player was a member of the team that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. The governor regretted that neither the ministry of sports nor the Nigeria Football Federation was represented during the visit.
Obi had also presented a cheque of N30m to Ikpeazu Redoutable Football Club at Imeobi playground Onitsha the same amount he recently presented to the owner of Rojenny Stadium, Mr. Rommy Ezeonwuka.
He said the money was to assist the club to upgrade the infrastructure at the playground and equip the players for future competitions.
He was optimistic that the facility would produce future champions, provide employment and check crime.
Former Rangers and Nigeria goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala, commended the state government for its effort, urging other states to do the same.
