Rivers PDP crisis: Councillors pass vote of confidence on Amaechi

AmaechiThe Rivers State chapter of the National Councillors’ Forum of Nigeria (NCF) has passed a vote of confidence on Governor Chibuike Amaechi for his giant strides in the development of the state. The councillors made their position known on the current crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a communique issued last Friday at the end of their meeting in Port Harcourt. “We further commend him for maintaining security where Rivers citizens can sleep with their eyes closed.”

They also condemned in strong terms the alleged six months salary donated to an ex-warlord by a serving minister. “We view the recent news report where a serving minister in the state donated six months of his salary to a former militant warlord as suspicious and hope that the essence was not to sponsor the destabilisation of the present peace the state is enjoying.”

They urged elders of the state to call such politicians to order, saying that they viewed their actions as impeding the progress of the state. Seventeen councillors, who signed the communique on behalf of the 22 local government areas, excluding Obio/Akpor council, which was sacked last week by the state House of Assembly, pledged their loyalty and assured the governor of the support of the grassroots.

They urged him not to be distracted by the ranting of some Abuja politicians, “who do not have the real grassroots support and the interest of the state at heart.” They warned that any attempt to cause disorder in the state would be resisted by them. “We resist any attempt to turn the state into an arena of gladiators by those who envy the state as the fastest in development in the South-South region, Niger Delta region and Nigeria in general.”
