UCL : Can Real Madrid do it again?

Real MadridReal Madrid faces a huge task ahead of today’s second leg clash with Borussia Dortmund. The club lost the first leg 4-1. The Nation online reviews five comebacks of Real Madrid. Can they do it against the German opposition today?


Real Madrid 5-1 Derby County (Agg 6-5, 1975-76 European Cup 2nd Round)


Charlie George netted thrice in the first leg at Derby’s Baseball Ground to put Derby Country 4-1 ahead of their trip to Madrid for the second leg.


Two goals from present Wigan coach, Roberto Martinez before half time (the first in the second minutes) and another by Santilana brought the Bernabeu alive but Charlie George beat the Madrid keeper at the hour mark. With five minutes left, Real Madrid’s Pirri scored to take the game to extra time and on the 100th minutes; Santilana completed the comeback for Real Madrid to the shock of Derby County.


Real Madrid 3-0 Celtic (Agg 3-2, 1979-80 European Cup quarter-final)


A goal apiece from George McCluskey and Johnny Doyle won the first leg for the British opponents but Madrid won the second leg 3-0 and qualified. Current Spain coach, Vincent Del Bosque was part of that team.


Real Madrid 6-1 Anderlecht (Agg 6-4, 1984-85 Uefa Cup 3rd Round)


Anderlecht won the first leg comfortably with three goals with the Spanish side unable to find the back of the net in Belgium. Bernabeu proved the difference again as Madrid-born forward Emilio Butragueno scored a hat-trick. The game ended 6-1 in favour of Real Madrid who went ahead to lift the trophy.


Real Madrid 3-0 Inter (Agg 3-2, 1984-85 Uefa Cup semi-final)


“90 minutes in the Bernabeu is a very long time” was the famous warning of Real Madrid forward Juanito to Inter Milan midfielder Graziano Bini after the Italian team ran out 2-0 winner at the first leg Just four months after Real Madrid 6-1 battering of Anderlecht


Juanito was right as Madrid leveled before the close of 45 minutes and another goal at the hour mark send the Nerazzurri out of the competition.


Real Madrid 4-0 Gladbach (Agg 5-5, 1985-86 Uefa Cup 3rd Round)


If you think Real Madrid comebacks are against British, Belgium and Italian oppositions only, you are wrong. They did it against a German team with a better score line to Borrussia Dortmund.


Borussia Monchengladbach won the first leg 5-1 and was almost certain of progress to the next round. But Real Madrid stunned them with four goals at the Bernabeu. The winning goal by Santilana was in the very last minute of the game, Dortmund should be careful at the Bernabeu.
